One does not simply walk into an unexpected party: How to throw a Hobbit birthday!
In October 2024 I turned 34. Not a notable birthday, yet I found myself at a point in life where I was feeling unexpectedly content and for the first time in many years; myself.
That may seem strange, but having masked much of myself, it's taken time to rediscover who this girl- now woman- actually is.
I've discovered this 34 year old me, greatly enjoys dressing up.
Actually I already knew that but I hadn't explored how at home I feel dressed in fantasy attire.
Maybe you will too!
It began with a hastily assembled book day costume, an anti costume to my colleagues Barbie choice. In a few days my Frodo costume was born, unlocking something buried deep within.
Nobody was surprised by my costume, many claimed that I looked like I dressed like that every day…not sure how to take that.
Apparently they knew more about me than I did.
🍂🍂Hobbit party: why?!🍂🍂
We had been sharing posts to each other from Halfling events on Instagram. This led to the algorithm supplying us with magical imagery for the entire summer, filling us with a deep desire for frolicking and petticoats.
Planning ✍✍
Inspired by a summer of being bombarded by videos of hobbit gatherings we decided the only thing to be done was to hold a Hobbit party!
It is tradition to go pumpkin picking for my birthday as it's usually the first weekend the patches open. So I planned for us to attend as usual except we would do so in Hobbit regalia!
🌟Steps to success 🌟
- Food
It’s no secret that hobbits adore food so the first thing to consider is the feast!
I planned a selection of hearty foods, mixing sweet and savoury.
As we were out most of the morning it had to be items that could be set out last minute.
For an Autumn gathering stick to rustic and seasonal flavours with pumpkin and berries.
Aim for homemade items and of course roast potatoes!
Below are some of the dishes we had!
Pumpkin scones.
radish mushroom pasta’
‘Spooky offering & Pumpkin cheese.'
pumpkin cakes and bread, featuring handmade Hobbit door.

- Atmosphere
For a cosy jovial atmosphere, I used a Netflix fireplace and a playlist of upbeat folky tunes.
I draped faux foliage, mushrooms and acorns through the house creating a nature inspired Shire feel.
Candles and fairy lights helped.
- Costumes
Whilst you want everyone to costume up, you always want your guests to be comfortable.
Consider providing extra capes, ears or flower headdresses!
I love autumnal hues, so chose an autumn inspired outfit.
The pivotal moment I realised how incredible I feel dressing this way!
💫💫💫Top tip💫💫💫
You don’t have to buy new. Most of my costume is layering various length skirts I already had.
Hobbits favour natural colours, florals, lace, soft fabrics, swishy petticoats, floral headdresses and aprons.
Layer up; accessorise with belts and you might be able to get away only buying a cape and ears! (which can be found on Amazon!)
- Frolic
It wouldn’t be a Hobbit party without merriment.
We put the Flaming red hair song on and frolicked through the pumpkin patch, it felt so freeing and enjoyable.
If you aren’t into public frolicking, try it at your venue.
Link arms, twirl, skip, whatever takes your fancy!
Just be sure you at least give it a try!
